Truck hauling chemicals breaks down

BRODHEAD - A semi trailer hauling hazardous material from Woodbridge Corp. in Brodhead, broke down on the road Wednesday causing small drops of plyetherpolyol, a non-toxic liquid, to drip onto the ground.

Incident commanders determined there was no need to evacuate or cordon off the area.

The rear axle on the trailer broke around 3 p.m. along Wisconsin 11 at 16th Street.

Investigation determined that among the 76 drums of liquid cargo were seven barrels of diethanolamine, a manufacturing chemical waste product considered hazardous.

The Brodhead Police Department and Brodhead Fire Department, along with the Wisconsin State Patrol, responded to the scene and sand was placed beneath the trailer to absorb the polyetherpolyol that dripped from the trailer.

It is unknown what kind of liquid dripped from the trailer. Brodhead Police Chief Tom Moczynski said the materiel that dripped didn't have the same consistency as the hazardous material.

Moczynski said none of the liquid made contact with the soil or ground water entry points. He said the sand was later removed for safe disposal by a materiel clean up crew from Woodbridge.

The axle was repaired and the semi returned to Woodbridge for inspection.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the United States Department of Transportation were notified and requested Woodbridge clean the trailer.
