MONROE - The Green County Sheriff's Department is advising residents to be on the alert for a telephone scam reported in the area.

A possibly related telephone scam was reported Monday, May 28, by a resident in the 1600 block of 25th Avenue, according to Monroe police.

The scam involves an automated caller contacting numerous cellular phone customers, claiming that a bank account has been compromised and requesting that the customer provide personal information such as PIN codes, bank account numbers and Social Security numbers.

No legitimate business, credit company or bank would require such information, advises the sheriff's department, and residents should only give out such information if they initiate contact with a company.
