NEW GLARUS - New Glarus police officer Jeff Sturdevant will be acting chief of the department effective Aug. 1, according to Nic Owen, New Glarus village administrator.

Sturdevant, who has been with the department since 2001, will replace Steve Allbaugh, who will retire from the department July 30 after 10 years as chief.

Owen said the village board has two candidates for the police chief position. Sturdevant and officer Szvon Conway have both expressed an interest in the job.

If the village hires anyone from the department, a new chief could be in place by September, Owen said.

If the village decides to look outside of the department, a new chief might not be hired until October.

Allbaugh told the board June 28 that he planned to retire as chief to take a job in Madison.
