MENLO, Ga./BRODHEAD, Wis. - Steve Speth, age 61, formerly of Brodhead, passed away on Wednesday, December 24, 2008, at a hospital in Rome, GA. He was born in Belmont, WI on March 6, 1947, the son of James and Dorothy (Jaques) Speth.
Steve moved to Brodhead with his family from Belmont, WI in 1957. He graduated from Brodhead High School in 1965 where he played football and basketball. He served in the U.S. Army as a helicopter pilot and was Chief Warrant Officer. He served in Vietnam and was awarded the Purple Heart. He had worked for several private helicopter companies in Louisiana, dusting crops and transporting workers to and from oil rigs. Most recently, Steve had worked for Mohawk Carpets in Georgia.
He is survived by his three children, Matthew Speth, Madison, WI, Laura Brown, Tampa, FL, Katie (Mike) Gass, Menlo, GA; his mother, Dorothy Speth, a brother, Leonard (Christine) Speth, both of Brodhead; two sisters, Kathy (Tom) Matteson, Brodhead, Michelle (Randy) Krahenbuhl, DeMotte, IN; grandchildren, Morgan Speth, Nevaeh Brown, Courtney and James Luther Gass; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Wade Steven; his father, James Speth; paternal grandparents, Wilbur and Nellie Speth; maternal grandparents, Lester and Alice Jaques; a sister-in-law, Theresa Speth; and a special uncle and aunt, Charles and Minnie Forman.
Memorial and Military Services will be held in the Spring of 2009. The D. L. NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, BRODHEAD, is assisting the family.
