BRODHEAD - Sanford A. Peterson, age 102, of Brodhead, formerly of Argyle, WI, passed away on Sunday, March 25, 2012, at Woods Crossing Nursing Home, Brodhead. He was born on November 21, 1909 in Wiota Township, Lafayette County, WI, the son of Anton E. and Inga ((Holverson) Peterson. He married Mary M. Shelton in Freeport, IL on December 12, 1933. She passed away on February 4, 1999.
Sanford farmed with his wife for 1 year in Davis, IL and South Wayne, WI. He and his wife moved to Wiota Township, Lafayette County and farmed from 1936 to 1989 for a total of 55 years. He retired and moved to Brodhead in 1989. He was a member of the East Wiota Lutheran Church, where he served on the council for 15 years and also a custodian for many years. He was a clerk at the Owego School, and was an assessor of Wiota Township. He worked part time at Argyle Pure Oil Co., installed 150 TV antennas and also did mechanic work there. After moving to Brodhead, he joined the Bethlehem Lutheran Church where he continued to help. Sanford loved to play pool and was in a group that played weekly. He also loved to garden, fish, and enjoyed flower gardening. He was a card club member and loved to play dominoes.
Sanford is survived by two daughters; Evonne (Jerry) Montefelt, rural Juda, WI, Jeannette Davis, Brodhead; and a son, Larry (Carmen) Peterson, El Paso, TX; several grandchildren, Allan (Shannon Kelley) Montefelt, Detroit, MI, Brian (Angella) Montefelt, Brodhead, David (Susan) Davis, Spring Hill, TN, Dale (Nancy) Davis, Mesa, AZ, Debra (Randy) Barney, Mesa, AZ, Mike Davis, Brodhead, Eric (Anrea) Peterson, Albuquerque, NM, Lawrence (Alma) and Jeffrey Peterson, both of El Paso, TX; great-grandchildren, Nicole and Hannah Montefelt, Lisa, Steven, Lauren, Diane, Joshua Barney, Thomas and Elena Davis, Jenna Peterson, Catherine, Lawrence Jr., Sammy, Naomi Peterson; two step great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, four sisters, Mary, Lena, Alma, Ida, two brothers, Alvin and Ingual, and a son-in-law, Ray Davis.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, March 30, 2012, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Brodhead, with Pastor Peder Johanson officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m., Thursday at the D.L. NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, BRODHEAD, WI. Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Friday, at the East Wiota Cemetery.
