Robert W. Hougas, age 90, of Monroe, formerly of Madison, died Friday, February 13, 2009 at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Monroe. Bob was born June 17, 1918 in Harrison County, Missouri, the son of Harley Jay and Maude Roberta (Richardson) Hougas. He graduated high school in Iron River, WI and attended the University of Wisconsin- Madison. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and before his deployment overseas, Bob married Janet Anthony in 1943.
Following his honorable discharge in 1945, Bob earned his Doctorate degree in plant genetics at the U.W.
He and Janet settled in Madison where Bob worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He then was employed in the Genetics Division of the U.W. Agriculture Dept. where he eventually became Assistant Dean.
He is survived by his brother, Walter (Agnes) Hougas of Monroe; three nephews and one niece.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Janet, on June 5, 2003; and a sister, Eva Elizabeth Skudstad.
A memorial visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 19, 2009, at the NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, Monroe.
