Robert R. Hartwig, age 84 of Monroe, died surrounded by his family following a long courageous battle with cancer on Saturday, January 9, 2010 at the Monroe Manor.

Robert was born September 30, 1925 in Jordan Township, the son of George and Ella (Kundert) Hartwig. He graduated from Pleasant Valley Country School, having one teacher for all 8 grades.

He married Betty Wagner of Brodhead on January 15, 1947 in Monroe. He fulfilled a childhood dream of farming which he did all his life until retiring and moving to Monroe in 1980.

Bob was a member of Monroe Moose Lodge No. 754, enjoyed listening to country music, dancing to old time music, and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Betty Hartwig of Monroe; a son, Gary (Janet) Hartwig of Monroe; a daughter, Patti Jo (Doug) Schindler of DeForest, WI; three loving grandchildren, twins Brett (Jeanne) Hartwig of Freeport, Il and Brad Hartwig of Oshkosh, WI, and Lindsey (Dustin) Kreul of Belleville; twin great granddaughters, Courtney and Alyssa Hartwig of Freeport; a sister, Mildred (Herman) Blum of Edgerton; three brothers,

Harold Hartwig, Leland (Arlene) Hartwig, and twin brother, William (Marilyn) Hartwig, all of Monroe; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Linda Lou who died along with eight other Juda girls when a jet crashed into the New Orleans Hilton Inn Hotel on March 30, 1967 while on their senior class trip ; and a sister-in-law, Bertha Hartwig.

A visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at the NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, Monroe.

A luncheon for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, January 13 at 3:00 p.m. at the Monroe Moose Lodge. Per Robert's request private family funeral services will be held with burial in Greenwood Cemetery, Monroe.
