Robert Jay Schlichting, age 69 of Monroe, died on Thursday, December 27, 2012 at the Karmenta Center in Madison. He was born on August 1, 1943, the son of Jack and Jeanette (Hughes) Schlichting. Jay was a graduate of Monroe High School and of U.W. Platteville. He was married to Marilynn Brennan. Jay spent most of his career in the trucking industry, retiring after working as a dispatcher for freight companies in the Monroe area. He was a member of St. Clare of Assisi Parish and the Huber Bock Club. Whenever you saw Jay, you would receive a big smile, a "How you doing?" and be called by name. He was a delight to be around, with a positive attitude. A good day was one spent amongst his friends at the Corner Café, Baumgartner's Cheese Store and Bullet's Pizza, and Jay was fortunate to have had many good days. He was an avid cyclist, participating in several tours and races; one always knew where he was when you saw his bike parked. Jay enjoyed sports at every level, having played just about all of them as a young man. He particularly looked forward to talking with his grandkids about their track and swim meets and soccer, baseball, softball and basketball games.

Jay's family express their gratitude to the health care professionals who cared for him at Monroe Clinic Hospital, UW Hospital and Clinics, Select Specialty Hospital and Karmenta Center. To a person, you were competent, kind and gentle with a man who means so much to us.

He is survived by his son, Dan (Susan) Schlichting; mother, Jeanette Schlichting; grandchildren, Declan, Conor and Bridget all of Madison; sisters, JoAnn (Randy) Smith of Madison, Jan Schlichting of Milwaukee, Janine (Dana) Jaster of Waunakee; and aunts and uncles, including his cherished uncle Don Schlichting of Durango, CO. He is predeceased by his father, Jack and aunt, Gay Schlichting.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at 12:00 noon at St. Clare of Assisi Parish, at St. Victor Catholic Church in Monroe, with Fr. Larry Bakke as Celebrant. A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 10:00 A.M. until time of Mass at the Church. The Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home, Monroe is serving the family.
