Rebecca "Becky" Trumpy Crosswait, 62, passed away on Friday, March 6, 2009 after a courageous battle with brain cancer. Rebecca June was born March 8, 1946 in Kenosha, WI, to Robert and Harriette (Riemer) Trumpy. The family moved to Monroe in 1947. Becky graduated from Monroe High School in 1964 and at that time was very active in Girl Scouts and the MHS Band. She went on to graduate from Madison General School of Nursing and earned her BS in nursing from San Diego State University, California.
Becky married Paul Gillings in 1968. They had two children, daughter, Dru Michelle and son, Bowen Nelson. After Paul's tour of duty with the U.S. Navy, they moved to Waupaca, WI. From 1974-1980, Becky served as a school nurse. In 1980 the family moved to Rapid City, SD, where she worked in various nursing and health care positions. She also attended graduate school.
In 1988, Becky married Bruce Crosswait. That same year, the couple purchased the W.E. Adams home in Deadwood, SD, and established the Adams House Bed and Breakfast. They ran the business for four years during which they had the house placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Becky became the first president of the Deadwood Historic Preservation Commission. The city purchased the house in 1992 as an historic home museum, carrying on Becky's desire that the house be preserved.
Becky drew on her nursing experience to establish her favorite and most rewarding position as parish nurse for Canyon Lake United Methodist Church in Rapid City from 1999-2007. She developed a program that grew city-wide in coordination with Rapid City Regional Hospital and other healthcare providers. She retired to join her husband on their ranch west of town. Becky enjoyed antiques, vintage clothes, gardening, traveling, reading, camping and horses. Due to her love of vintage clothes, she is one of the 3 Silly Sisters Vintage and other curiosities at the Monroe Antique Mall.
