Rachel E. Miller, 96 of Monroe, formerly of Browntown, died Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at Community Living Home Options, Monroe. She was born May 9, 1915 in Jefferson Township, the daughter of Richard A. and Mabel E. (Call) Ellis. She graduated from Monroe High School in 1933 and married Clarence S. Miller on November 30, 1933. They farmed in Clarno Township until moving to Browntown in 1967. Rachel worked at Advance Transformer until retiring in 1980. She was also a volunteer escort driver for 7 years and an interpreter for the hearing impaired at the Monroe and Freeport Clinics. She was a member of St. Johns United Church of Christ, Monroe, for 47 years and Peace United Church of Christ, Browntown, for 30 years. Rachel enjoyed reading, knitting, crocheting, and doll making. Her true passion in life and for what she will be best remembered was caring for and helping others. She had a great sense of humor and an ability to make those around her feel good about themselves.
She is survived by three children, Shirley L. (Dale) Mingo of Bettendorf, Iowa, Keith S. (Shirley) Miller of Monroe, and Gerald C. (Joan) Miller of Browntown; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence, in 1995; five brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, May 15, 2011, at 2 p.m., at Peace United Church of Christ, Browntown, with Rev. Steve Hale officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be at the Newcomer Funeral Home, Monroe, on Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m. A memorial fund will be established in Rachel's name.
