Quinten Jerome Syse, age 93 of Blanchardville died on Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at the Monroe Clinic Hospital. He was born on August 18, 1919 on the Syse home farm in York Township, Green County, WI to Glenn & Tena (Retrum) Syse. He grew up on the family farm, working the farm with his parents and siblings, and going to Sunnyside country school, and then graduated from Blanchardville High School in 1937. He then went to the UW Madison, graduating in 1941 with a degree in dairy husbandry. Following college, Quinten returned home to operate the family farm. He was married on February 16, 1946 in the Yellowstone Lutheran Church to Arlene Gunderson. Quinten and Arlene operated the family farm together from 1941 until 1977 when he and Arlene moved to Blanchardville. Quinten served as York Township Clerk from 1946 to 1977. Quinten and Arlene had a huge garden for years and loved sharing the produce with family and the whole community. He was an active member of the Sons of Norway for many years. He was a regular at the Viking Café for coffee hour every morning for a long time. He loved going to all the sporting events that his children and grandchildren were in. Quinten was an avid Lefse, Lutefisk and Klub maker. Quinten and Arlene enjoyed traveling together, including fall color trips, and trips to Norway and Alaska. He also went on deer hunting trips with the Lageson family, and Canadian Fishing trips for many years. He was a very active member of the Blanchardville Lutheran Church where he was a council member and long-time choir member. He was the Blanchardville Graceland Cemetery sexton for many years.
Quinten is survived by his four children, Ron (Ellen) Syse of Blanchardville, Mary Ann (Steve) Thomasson of Elizabeth, Illinois, Jim (Patty) Syse of Blanchardville, and Roger (Deb) Syse of Arlington; son-in-law, Terry Boehlke of Baraboo; One sister, Janis (John) Metzger of Janesville; two sisters-in-law, Audrey (Harlow) Gierhart of Mauston, and Virginia Gunderson of Seattle, WA; fourteen grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren with 3 on the way; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter Patti Boehlke who died on December 21, 2008; his wife Arlene who died on October 23, 2009; and one sister, Victoria (Stuart) Schofield.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 15, 2012 at 1:00 PM at the Blanchardville Lutheran Church in Blanchardville. Rev. Mark Gruner of the Pecatonica Lutheran Parish will officiate. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery in Blanchardville. Visitation will be held on Friday evening, December 14, 2012 from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at the Blanchardville Lutheran Church.
