NEW GLARUS - The New Glarus Police Department received a complaint Nov. 10 about the attempted scam of an elderly resident.
According to Police Chief Steve Allbaugh, the resident received a check from "City Glass Specialty, Inc.," from Fort Wayne, Ind., with instructions to send a money order in the amount of $2,700 to a specified location.
Allbaugh said a letter was also sent with the check. The letter informed the person they had won the 2009 United States Sweepstakes lottery and the $2,700 would pay for taxes.
The resident didn't send any money and contacted the police department.
Allbaugh said the suspects target people between the ages of 75 and 85.
Anyone who gets a suspicious letter or check in the mail should contact the police department, he said.
