WINSLOW - Orla M. Ammon, 88, passed away Monday, January 12, 2015 at Presence St. Joseph's Center in Freeport, IL, surrounded by her family. She was born on August 30, 1926 in Freeport, IL to Lloyd and Amy (Richtemeyer) Thomas. She graduated from Pearl City High School in 1944 and attended the Deaconess School of Nursing in Freeport graduating in 1947. Orla worked as a registered nurse at St. Claire's Hospital in Monroe, WI. She married John Ammon, Jr. on August 28, 1949 at the Zion Evangelical (Sabin) Church in Pearl City, IL, and, together, they owned and operated Ammon Turkey Farm at their home in Winslow, IL from 1949 until retiring in 1993.
Orla was a member of the McConnell United Methodist Church and the Nurses Alumni Association. She was a former member of the Eastern Star and the Winslow Methodist Women's Club. She loved playing cards, especially pinochle and playing golf on the Women's League and couples league at the Lena Golf Club. She also enjoyed taking fishing trips to Canada. One of her favorite pastimes was spending time with her grandchildren. Although none of them lived close by, she made the most of her time she had with them. She also loved crocheting, and besides making too many baby afghans to count Orla crocheted over 65 lap blankets for the Wounded Warrior Program that were donated to the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
She is survived by her husband, children: Amy (Gary) Bublitz of West Dundee, IL , Trish (JC) Bishop of O'Fallon, IL , John F. (Nanette) Ammon of Longmont, Co, and Lisa Ammon of Freeport, IL; 5 grandchildren: Sarah Bublitz of Arlington, VA, Joshua Bishop of O'Fallen, IL, John Thomas Bishop of Urbana, IL, Isaiah Ammon and Jared Ammon of Longmont, Co.; sister-in-law Elaine Thomas of Pearl City and brother-in-law Leland Wenzel of Lena and many nieces and nephews.
Orla is preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers Emery Thomas and James Thomas, sister-in-laws Frieda Thomas, Marjorie Wenzel and Marian Timmerman and brother-in-law John Timmerman.
Visitation will be held from 3:00 - 6:30 p.m. on Friday, January 16, 2015 at the Leamon Funeral Home in Winslow, IL.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2015 at 11:00 am at the McConnell United Methodist Church, 211 North Hulbert Street, McConnell, IL with visitation from at 10:00 am until the time of service.
Cremation Rites have been accorded.
Officiating will be Ernie Stabenow.
A luncheon will follow the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in her name.
