RIO - Nancy Ann (Hohlstein) Alexander, 65, passed away peacefully, at home, surrounded by her loving husband and three girls, Saturday morning, January 10, 2015.

She was born on November 28, 1949 to Raymond and Ella Mae (Jurgerson) Hohlstein. She graduated from Rio Senior High School in 1968. Nancy lived, worked and raised her family in the Rio area for most of her life. During her years here, she established many meaningful relationships in this community of which she was always proud to be a part. It was her warm smile, caring attitude, and her willingness to always take the time to listen and to offer help to those that needed her, which made her a special wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.

After years of working at the Columbia County Nursing Home, where she made many close friends and positively impacted the lives of those around her, she retired in June, 2012. She was looking forward to spending more time with her husband of 25 years, Paul G. Alexander. Her plans included gardening, fishing, spending time with her daughters and grandchildren, as well as traveling once her husband joined her in retirement. Sadly, she was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer before she had a chance to settle in and enjoy her retirement plans.

Despite the diagnosis, Nancy was determined to make the most of the time she had remaining. She remained upbeat, positive and witty while she fought hard to be able to make the most of her time with her family and friends.

Nancy leaves behind her husband, Paul; sister, Jackie (Paul) Pafford, three daughters, Mary Jo (Paul) Wenzel, Rita (Kory) Ehlert, and Sarah Risgaard; 9 grandchildren, Andy, Tanner, Jenna, April, Jacob, Kelsey, Jane, Jack, and Ryan; a vast number of wonderful friends; and a plethora of birds at her feeders.

She was preceded in death by her mother, father, and brother, Fred.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, January 14 from 3 to 7 PM and again on Thursday, January 15 from 10 to 11 AM at Smith Funeral & Cremation Service in Rio. Private memorial services will be held. Smith Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Rio is serving the family. www.smithfhcs.com.
