MONROE - A Monroe man with three convictions of driving drunk was arrested again on the same charge outside his home in the early morning hours of Saturday, Aug. 17, according to police.
Jay C. Gonstead, 44, faces a fourth offense of driving while intoxicated and a charge of resisting an officer, both misdemeanors. He was also cited for hit-and-run and unsafe backing of a vehicle.
Police responded to a call at 1:08 a.m. that Gonstead had backed his 1996 Dodge truck into another vehicle while trying to leave an apartment building parking lot in the 2700 block of 6th Avenue.
Officers "got there before he had a chance to leave," said Fred Kelley, Monroe police chief.
During field sobriety testing, Gonstead reportedly walked away from the officer handling the test and then violently struggled with him. Gonstead refused a blood test, which could result in further penalties. He was jailed.
His signature bond was set at $1,000 in Green County Circuit Court on Monday, Aug. 19, with the conditions that he not drink or go into bars or liquor stores. A not-guilty plea was entered on the DWI charge. He has a pre-trial conference Oct. 1.
Gonstead's most recent DWI conviction was in 2005, also in Green County, according to state court records. He was sentenced to 30 days in jail on that conviction and had his license revoked two years.
