MONROE - Police are looking for a black, 22-inch Trek bicycle with silver writing and racing-type handlebars following a reported theft at Vince's Pizza, 815 1st St.
A Vince's Pizza employee reported at 9:59 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, that his unlocked, unattended bicycle had been stolen that evening while it was parked outside the restaurant.
Recovering the bicycle may be a challenge because it wasn't registered, said Police Chief Fred Kelley. There is a one-time $2 fee for licensing a bicycle with the Monroe Police.
"Buy a new bike and one of your first stops on the way home should be the police station," Kelley said.
Monroe police often find bicycles dumped around town or as far away as Madison, he said. With a license number, they can more easily identify a bike, even if it's been repainted, and return it to the owner.
Otherwise the lost or stolen bicycle will sit at the police station for a few months, then get donated to the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store.
