Melvia D. Gobeli, age 94, died Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at Pleasant View Nursing Home. She was born July 19, 1914, the daughter of George W. and Bertha Mae ( Dreibelbis) Kline near the Illinois-Wisconsin state line. Melvia was raised by Louisa (Lizzy) Schmidt from age seven.
Melvia (Melvy) married John C. Gobeli Jr. on January 3, 1934. They farmed near the state line for several years and later worked as a waitress for 37 years. She met many friends and customers while working at the Waffle Shop, Crystal Tower, Hilltop Inn, Corner Cafe and Grossen's in Browntown before retiring in 1987. Melvia enjoyed playing cards and quilting; all hand stitched, no sewing machines. She quilted up until her eyesight failed.
Melvia is survived by a daughter, Wanda Kline of Monroe; sons, Ivan (Marlene) Gobeli of Monroe, Walter (Nellie) Gobeli of MO, James (Judy) Gobeli of Argyle and John (Sandie) Gobeli of Woodford; daughter-in-law, Mary Gobeli of CT; 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is her roommate, surrogate sister and co-conspirator at Pleasant View for the last three years, Esther Hale.
She was preceded in death by her parents, 10 brothers and sisters, a son Wendell, and a grandson in infancy.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 11, 2009 at SHRINER-HAGER-GOHLKE FUNERAL HOME with Pastor Mary Gafner officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Monroe. A visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home.
