Mary Hannora Brecklin, 92, of Whitewater, formerly of Monroe, passed away Nov. 23rd. Mary was born Feb. 14, 1916, in Brookings, SD, the fourth of five children, to Mike and Mary Ellen (Murphy) Maher. Following the death of her parents, she moved to Freeport, IL in 1930 and graduated from Freeport High School in 1933. On Dec. 30, 1942, she married Glenn Brecklin, who preceded her in death May 19, 1993. She and Glenn farmed in Clarno township for 33 years, opening their home to many relatives throughout the years. In 1975 they left the farm and retired to Monroe. Mary was active in St. Victor's Catholic Church, a past president of their Altar Society. She belonged to Homemakers, Farm Bureau, and was a 4-H Sewing Leader for many years, teaching countless girls to sew. She was well-known for her caramels at Christmas and her sweet pickles in the summer. She enjoyed playing euchre and being with her family. Integrity, generosity, compassion, selflessness, and a strong faith made up her character. Always the care-giver, she volunteered at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Monroe Hospital, and for Apostolate to the Handicapped. Mary was the family historian and the "go to" person for any birthday, anniversary, or genealogy information, which made her diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease in 2000, all the more heartbreaking. Very proud of her Irish heritage, a 1996 trip to Ireland with her daughter, was a special experience.
She is survived by her daughter, Marilyn (Jim), W4402 County A, Elkhorn, WI; grandson, Jesse (Laura), Panama City, Panama; and grandson, Jacob, Elkhorn, WI. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, November 26, 2008, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Victor Catholic Church, Monroe, with Father Michael Klarer officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Monroe. A visitation will be held at the NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, Monroe, on Tuesday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. and at the church on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. A Rosary Service will be held at 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. A memorial fund will be established in Mary's name for the Apostolate to the Handicapped or the Alzheimers Association.
"May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of His hand."
