Marjorie Zupanc (nee Wolfenden), age 88 of Milwaukee, formerly of Monroe died on Thursday, December 24, 2009, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Edward Zupanc, and survived by her three children: Mary L. Zupanc, M.D. and her husband David Allen Jones, of Milwaukee; John Zupanc and his wife, Debra Vercauteren, of Oshkosh; and Thomas Zupanc and his wife, Mary (Beckers) Zupanc, of St. Cloud, Minnesota. She is also survived by her sister, Mrs. Eleanor (Wolfenden) Gobis, of Brookfield, and by five grandchildren.

Marjorie Mae Wolfenden was born in Wonewoc, Wisconsin, in 1921. Her family moved to Granville and she attended Menomonee Falls High School, where she was valedictorian of the Class of 1939. She went on to receive her BSRN degree from UW-Madison in 1944, and immediately enlisted in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, serving under extreme conditions with the 239th Gen. Hospital unit in France, and eventually with the 216th Hospital in Germany after the Nazi surrender. For her service to our country, Lt. Wolfenden was awarded the European Campaign ribbon with a battle star for participation in the Battle of the Bulge, and the World War II Victory ribbon.

After the war, Marjorie was head nurse for Dr. William S. Middleton, Dean of the Medical School at the University of Wisconsin. It was there that Marjorie met Edward Zupanc, who had attended medical school on a special wartime military plan. As it happened, America soon went to war again, this time in Korea, and Dr. Zupanc was called to serve in a Navy hospital in Japan.

With two-year-old Mary in hand and pregnant with son John, Marjorie once again found herself crossing an ocean on a troop ship, only this time the Pacific, as a military wife. After the war, and a short stint in Duluth, the Zupanc's settled in Monroe, where Ed began a long association with the Monroe Clinic.

Besides raising a family, Marjorie Zupanc was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church, and she and Ed were longtime members of the Monroe Country Club. She served as a Girl Scout leader and Red Cross nurse, and volunteered for many other community activities. Dr. and Mrs. Zupanc were given a community service award in the late 1970s for their volunteerism.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 31, 2009, at Grace Lutheran Church with Rev. Carolyn Fredriksen officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Monroe. Visitation will be at the NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, Monroe, on Wednesday from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. and at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Memorials may be given in Marjorie's name to Grace Lutheran Church, Girl Scouts Badger Council, or the American Red Cross. To send the family a condolence go to www.newcomerfuneralhome.net.
