MONROE - A Rockford man convicted of fleeing from Monroe police and dealing cocaine here last November was sentenced to prison Tuesday, March 26.

Kareem Anderson Stewart, 31, pleaded no contest to the felony charges in Green County Circuit Court before Judge Thomas Vale and was given three years in prison and five years of extended supervision.

According to court records:

Police tried to make a traffic stop on Stewart while assisting with an undercover drug investigation Nov. 29.

Stewart had just finished delivering 2.2 grams of cocaine to Calvin D. Martin, Sr., 51, at Martin's home in the 1300 block of 14th Street. Martin has since pleaded guilty to selling cocaine in Monroe and is scheduled for sentencing June 4.

Stewart led police on a high-speed chase before abandoning his silver 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix in the parking lot of Stop-N-Go at 16th Avenue and 8th Street.

He took off on foot and was chased through several backyards before he got winded and police caught him. Officers found more than $3,000 in cash on him.

Stewart is ordered to continue substance abuse counseling, as deemed appropriate by his agent, while under the state's supervision. He owes the court $382.
