Louis Oostdik, age 92, passed away peacefully at his home in Monroe on May 10, 2012 of congestive heart failure. Louis Henry Oostdik was born to John and Nina (Plimpton) Oostdik on May 14, 1919. He grew up on the family farm in Mount Hope, Wisconsin with three siblings, June, John and Marinus. Louie completed eighth grade in Evansville then worked on the farm to support his mother, brothers, and sister.
Louie went to war in 1942. He served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Enterprise CV6 until 1945. Upon coming home, he met and married Sadie A. Tertin of Monroe on May 11, 1946. He was employed at Bruni Miller Lumber Company and over time became part owner of the company. He built a home in Monroe where he and Sadie raised three sons, Dennis (Diana) of Monroe, Neary (Patricia) of Prairie du Sac, and Thomas (Nancy) of St. Paul, MN.
Louie was active in the community as a volunteer with the VFW, the Cub Scouts, and delivering Meals on Wheels. He enjoyed hunting and playing golf. He joined the Yester-Year Auto Club while restoring 5 cars over the course of 30 years. After his beloved wife of 61 years passed away in 2007, Louie enjoyed the Monroe Senior Center and his friends there.
He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings and wife. He is survived by his children, six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, a brother-in-law, Virgil (Joyce) Tertin of Monroe, a sister-in-law, Helen (Marinus) Oostdik of Middleton, and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Louie's life will be held on Tuesday, May 15, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at the Newcomer Funeral Home, 1329 31st Avenue, Monroe. Burial with military rites will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Monroe. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Monday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Behring Senior Center.
