LENA - LaVerne C. Schneider, 82, passed away Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at FHN Memorial Hospital in Freeport, IL. He was born on September 10, 1933 in Winslow, IL, the son of Alfred and Flossie (Luke) Schneider. LaVerne was a graduate of Winslow High School. He married Ilene Zimmerman on November 7, 1953 in Monticello, WI.

LaVerne served our country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1953-1955. He worked as a carpenter with his brother, Len. He also worked for auto parts companies Sieg and General Auto for many years. On April 1, 1998, he began working for Leamon Funeral Homes until his retirement on September 30, 2013. LaVerne was a member and served as President for many years of the American Legion Post # 592 Stewart-Schneider Legion. He attended the Monroe Bible Church. LaVerne was a recipient of the "Shoot the Bull" Award now known as the North West Illinois Sports Hall of Fame. Prior to him joining the military, he played professional baseball for the St. Louis Browns in the American League. LaVerne also enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Ilene, of Lena; 2 daughters - SueAnn (George) McCarty and Cheryl Schneider; 2 granddaughters - Candace (Brett) Monson and Andria (Rhett) Cornelius; a great grandson Rhyder Cornelius and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings-Leonard, Pearl Minder, Viola Retzlaff, Cletus, Wilbur, Alma Johnson, John, Ralph, Lucille Gill and Delvin.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 18, 2016 at the Leamon Funeral Home in Lena with a visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Visitation will be from 2:00-6:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 17, 2016 at the Leamon Funeral Home in Lena.

Pastor Dan Krahenbuhl will officiate.

Cremation Rites will be accorded and interment will be held at a later date in Rock Lily Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in his name.
