John M. Burke, age 69 of Freeport, Illinois, died Sunday, November 23, 2008 at Monroe Clinic Hospital. He was born December 15, 1938 in Danville, IL, the son of Cecil Ray and Cleone (Henson) Burke. He graduated from Thorton High School and Moody Bible Institute.

John and Janet Darin were married on October 14, 1961 in Dolton, IL. John worked for Mark's Toggery in men's clothing, dressing the elite in the Harvey, Homewood and Flossmoor areas. He also worked for Kline's Department Store in Chicago Heights. John was known for his bright smile, his outstanding service and personality in the clothing industry. In 1976, John and his family were called to the mission field in Venezuela, South America, where he served at the Christiansen Academy as a dorm parent for missionary children. In Caripe, Venezuela he served at the Bible Institute in Church Development and planted a Church in La Florida, Venezuela. John will be remembered for his generosity, never refusing anyone in need that came to his door, day or night. He was a member of Monroe Bible Church.

Survivors include his wife, Janet E. Burke of Freeport, IL; daughters, Melody (David) Carvajal of Cedarville, IL and Maria Joy Burke of Watseka, IL; precious grandson, Brock Carvajal; brother, Cecel Ray (Kay) Burke of Santa Ana, CA; and sister, Norma (James) Lienhard of Florida. For 19 years of faithful care and support the family would like to recognize and thank Marianne Hoffman. The family is especially grateful for the care given by Margo, D.O.N. and her staff at Monroe Manor Nursing Home. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 29, 2008 at Monroe Bible Church with Pastor Dan Krahenbuhl officiating. Burial will follow in Grandview Cemetery in Freeport, IL. A visitation will be held on Friday, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Monroe Bible Church, 2613 8th Ave., Monroe. Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home, 1455 Mansion Dr., Monroe, WI, is assisting the family.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in John's memory.
