John J. Burgy, age 71 of Monticello, was born to eternal life on Thursday, November 20, 2008 at HospiceCare in Fitchburg.

John was born on March 15, 1937, the son of the late Fred "Ted" and Mary (Soseman) Burgy. He graduated from Monroe High School in 1955 and the University of Wisconsin Madison in 1959 with an Agricultural Engineering Minor and Animal Husbandry Major.

John and May Steckhahn were married on September 13, 1969 in West Bend, WI. They settled on the Burgy Century home farm in Washington Township where John farmed his entire life.

He was an active member of Zwingli United Church of Christ in Monticello where he had served on the church consistory and senior choir. John was a former member of the Green County Fair Board, Green County Barbershop/Harmony Chorus, U.W. Madison Iota Chapter of Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity and was a supporter of the Monroe and Monticello FFA Chapters.

In addition to farming, John enjoyed working on machinery and restoring John Deere two cylinder tractors.

John loved his family dearly and was happiest at home on the farm.

He is survived by his wife, May Burgy of Monticello; his daughter, Elizabeth Burgy of Maple Grove, MN; his son, Glenn Burgy of Monticello; two sisters, Mary Ann (James) Koepke of Oconomowoc, and Nancy (Deane) Thomas of Cobb, WI; nieces and nephews; and two sisters-in-law, Pearl Terrazas of Billings, MT, and Caroline (Wallace) Fischer of Houston, MO.

A Celebration of John's life will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, November 24, 2008, at Zwingli United Church of Christ, Monticello, with Rev. Lawrence Balleine officiating. Inurnment will be in Highland Cemetery, Monticello. A visitation will be held at the Zwingli Church on Sunday, November 23, from 4 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. A memorial fund will be established in John's name. The Voegeli-Newcomer Funeral Home, Monticello, is assisting the family.

John's wish is to remind all men age 50 and older to have their prostate PSA checked routinely.
