James D. "Darryl" Bell Sr., 58, of Freeport, died Saturday, February 9, 2008 at FHN Memorial Hospital. He was born on September 9, 1949 in Rockford, the son of James and Gladys (Tryan) Bell.
Over the years Darryl was a well known local businessman. He owned and operated Bookies Tap, Bell Construction, Bell's Easy Wash and Bell's Grocery and Meats.
Darryl was a Green Bay Packers and St. Louis Fan. He enjoyed past trips to Busch Stadium with his friends. He was an avid golfer. He had a life long passion for restoring vintage autos. His grandchildren meant the world to him.
He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.
Survivors include his mother, Gladys Thruman of Freeport; two sons, James (Rosann) Bell of Freeport and Tim (Vicky) Arrington of Rockford; one daughter, Charity (John) Schneider of Freeport; one brother, Dale (Kris) Bell of Monroe, WI; three sisters, Diane York, Darlene (David) Bell-Smithers and Brandie Schleich, all of Freeport; 12 grandchildren; nieces and nephews, Carrie, Jack, Drake, Chase and Kaden and also three great nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his father, James and by his stepfather, Kenneth Thruman.
Memorial service will be Thursday 2 p.m. at Burke-Tubbs Freeport. Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. Thursday until the time of service at Burke-Tubbs.
Lunch and fellowship to be held at Eagles Club following Memorial Service.
