Ira L. Mayer, age 88 of Monroe, Wisconsin, died Sunday, October 25, 2009, at Country Care, rural Monroe. He was born August 23, 1921 in Lafayette County, Wisconsin, the son of Casper and Angeline (Broge) Mayer and attended South Wayne area schools.
Ira married Irma E. Monte on June 16, 1943 at Peace United Church of Christ in Browntown and they farmed in the South Wayne area until moving to Monroe in 1976. He then worked at Equity Livestock Sale Barn as barn manager until retiring. Ira was a member of Peace United Church of Christ, and former member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #754, and Pecatonica Bit & Spur Saddle Club.
Ira enjoyed the country lifestyle. He most enjoyed the company of his friends, family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed playing cards with his friends.
Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Irma Mayer of Monroe; daughters, Marilyn Bartelt of Monroe and Darlyne (Terry) Dillon of Brodhead; 5 grandchildren, Michael (Melissa) Bartelt, Mark (Carrie) Bartelt, Michelle (Jonny) Richard, Julie (Robert) Hilliard, and Craig Dillon; and 5 great-grandchildren, Casey, Mitchell, and Maddie Bartelt, and Jaelyn and Jacob Hilliard. He was predeceased by his parents; sister, Rose Fleming in 1976; brother, Loyde Mayer in 1997; and son-in-law, Eugene Bartelt in 2003.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 29, 2009 at SHRINER-HAGER-GOHLKE FUNERAL HOME, 1455 Mansion Drive and 18th Avenue in Monroe with Pastor Ray Sowersby officiating. Burial will be in Saucerman Cemetery, Cadiz Township.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
