Harold "Giss" L. Gissing, age 86 of Monroe died on Thursday, January 31, 2013 at Pleasant View Nursing Home. He was born on July 13, 1926 the son of Robert and Nelda (Mohns) Gissing Sr. in rural Juda and attended Juda Schools. Harold and June Aleshire were married on June 12, 1982 in Monroe.

Harold farmed on the family farm in rural Juda for several years, worked for the Juda Lumber & Fuel Co., in 1944 he joined the WI State Guard, in 1947 he joined the WI National Guard, on October of 1961 he became activated to duty during the Berlin Crisis and served at Ft. Lewis until August of 1962 with Co. B&K 1158 as Staff Sergeant, he served a total of 44 years with the State & National Guard. He later worked for the Green Co. Highway Department and the State of Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs from September 1974 - July 1991.

Harold was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Zilmer Riley American Legion post #84, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #754, Division of Red Arrow Club. He was an avid hunter & fisherman, loved bowling, golfing, playing cards and spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his step-children, Brenda (Keith) Ingwell and Randall (Judy) Miller both of Monroe, step-grandchildren, Bradley (April) Mollenberendt, Terri (Stuart) Grossen, Patti (Tony) Wilhite and Melissa (Chris) Wuebben, Kayla Zimmerman and family, Kara Ziegemeier and family, Kim Ingwell and son, and 6 step - great-grandchildren, Brady, Alec, Kade, Makenzie, Landon and Abigail.

He is preceded in death by his parents, 1/2 brother, Harvey Miller, siblings, Gertrude Goecks, Rudolph Gissing, Ethel Hoover, Clarence Gissing, Robert Gissing Jr., Lawrence Gissing and Dorothy Gissing in infancy.

Funeral services will be held 12:00 Noon on Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home, 1455 Mansion Dr., and 18th Ave. with Rev. Gretchen Sylvester officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until time of service at 12:00 noon at the funeral home.

A memorial fund is being established in Harold's memory.
