Gladys Gibbons Shamburek, a native of Monroe and wife of a former Monroe resident, Dr. Roland H. Shamburek, died in Northern Virginia on February 5, 2010. She was a member of the Class A award-winning baton twirling squad with the Monroe High School Band during her high school years, graduating in 1948. Mrs. Shamburek graduated from the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee with a B.S. degree in education in 1952. After several years of teaching in Wisconsin, she accompanied her husband in his military career to Army posts throughout the United States and Europe. She was a member of the Roman Catholic Church, its Legion of Mary, the Wing of the Aerospace Medical Association, the Women's Club of the Army Surgeon General's Office, the Walter Reed Officers and Civilians Auxiliary, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Alumni Association and various volunteer and civic associations.
In addition to her husband, survivors include three sons, Steven Jay of Anchorage, Alaska, Dr. Robert Dean (Alexandra) of Potomac, Maryland and Dr. Daniel John (Dr. Elizabeth Grace) of Denver, Colorado and three grandchildren. Survivors also include one brother, Robert of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by her brother John (Claire) Gibbons of Thiensville, WI and two sisters Janice (Bernard) Lee of Monroe, WI, and Joyce (James) McDermott of West Allis, WI and her parents Mr. and Mrs. John R. Gibbons.
Service and burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery.
