Frederick "Fred" Beer Jr. age 99, of Monroe, died Thursday, November 26, 2015 at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born on August 22, 1916 at the Buckskin Cheese Factory, where his father was the cheese maker. The son of Frederick and Emma (Rothenbuehler) Beer Sr. He attended several rural schools in Green County. Frederick married Lillian F. F. Zurfluh on September 16, 1940 at the Little Brown Church in the Vale, at Nashua, Iowa.

Before WWII he worked for Joe Rohner at Rohner's tavern: he was Co-owner of City Hotel (now known as Suisse House) with Herb Steffen for 34 years; he also worked 4 years at Greenwood Cemetery.

He served in Company K 32nd Division National Guard from 1932-1938; served with 41st Infantry Division from 1942-1946, with rank as staff sergeant; served as Communication Chief, Division Artillery: he participated in 4 beach heads as follows: 2 New Guinea; 1 Island of Biak; 1 Philippine Island of Mindanao. He was in Hiroshima within a month after the Atomic Bomb was dropped. He received the W W II Victory Medal; Asiatic Pacific Medal with bronze Arrowhead and three bronze stars; Philippine Liberation Medal with one bronze star; Army of Occupation-Japan; and the Good Conduct Medal.

In 1965 after the Palm Sunday Tornado he was appointed by Mayor Walter Ekum to serve as Vice Chairman of the Urban Renewal Committee. He was a member of Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge #754, Zilmer Riley American Legion post #84, Cecil Jones VFW post 2312, Green County Conservation League and St. John's United Church of Christ, where he served on the church council.

He is survived by his son, James R. (Olga) Beer of Monroe; 5 grandchildren: Tara G. (Vikas Arora) Beer of Burlingame, CA, Crystal L. Beer of Brodhead, Jennifer R. Beer, of Milwaukee, Artem A. Beer of Minneapolis, MN; Alexander J. Beer, of Monroe; a great grandchild: Avni Frances Arora. He was preceded in death by his Parents; wife, Lillian; daughter, Phyllis K. Beer; siblings: Hulda Reasa, Walter, John, William, Arthur, Werner, Edward, Ralph and Alois Beer.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, December 2, 2015 at St. John's United Church of Christ, with Reverend Tiff Bates officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. A visitation will be held Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at St. John's United Church of Christ, with a Moose Service at 7:00 p.m.. A memorial fund will be established in Fred's memory.
