URBANA, Ill. - Fred Alfred Frehner, 86, of Urbana, formerly of Monroe, WI and Lehigh Acres, FL, passed away at 10:25 pm, December 15, 2014 at the Canterbury Ridge Assisted Living Residence.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. There will be no visitation or viewing. Renner-Wikoff Chapel in Urbana is handling arrangements.
Fred was born in Monticello, WI January 31, 1928 to Emil and Marie Wettach Frehner, both immigrants from Switzerland. He married Dolores Mae Stephenson on February 11, 1950. They enjoyed 60 years of devoted companionship before her death in 2010. Fred was also predeceased by his parents and his brother John. Surviving are two daughters: Linda (John) Braden of Champaign, IL and Beverly (Lawrence) Mitchell of Huntsville, AL; four granddaughters: Colette (Richard) Abel of League City, Texas, Holly Mitchell of Huntsville, AL, Sarah Katherine (Theodore) Brenner of Madison, WI, and Elizabeth (Jon) Wood of Fairfax, VA; and six great-grandchildren.
Fred graduated from Monticello, WI High School in 1946 and soon joined the family profession of cheese making. After several years making Swiss cheese independently in small rural factories in southern Wisconsin, he worked in a cheese making supply business in Monroe for about 30 years. Following retirement, in 1992, Fred and Delores enjoyed 14 years in Florida before moving to Urbana in 2006.
Fred was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Urbana and the Elks Lodge of Champaign. He had a wry sense of humor and enjoyed mixing a bit of Schweitzerdeutsch into conversations. He and Dolores were wonderful ballroom dancers. Fred was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He deeply cherished his family and friends.
