DARLINGTON - A former Warren, Ill., junior varsity basketball coach remains free on a $5,000 signature bond after making his initial appearance in Lafayette County Circuit Court Tuesday for sexual assault.
Cory L. Neff, 35, Warren, Ill., is charged with three counts of sexual assault of a student by school staff, each a class H felony.
He faces up to 18 years in prison and up to $30,000 in fines, if convicted. Court records indicate he had sexual contact with a 17-year-old female student Jan. 18, Jan. 24 and Feb. 15 in Lafayette County.
Dean Brinkmeier, athletic director for the Warren school district, said Neff served as junior varsity coach last season.
Brinkmeier said Neff was not a teacher in the school district and was let go in January.
His initial appearance continues at 1:30 p.m. April 1 before Lafayette County Circuit Court Judge William Johnston.
