TOWN OF SHULLSBURG — A 54-year-old Lancaster man died in a motorcycle crash near Shullsburg Saturday afternoon.

William R. Harris died at UW Hospital in Madison after the crash on the 3000 block of Lafayette County O around 4:45 p.m.

According to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office, Harris was driving north on County O when he tried to pass a UTV and lost control of the motorcycle. The motorcycle slid on the roadway into the east-side ditch. 

Harris, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken by Med Flight helicopter to UW Hospital, where he later died.

Shullsburg Fire and Shullsburg EMS assisted at the scene.

The crash is under investigation. 

Harris is the fifth person to die on Lafayette County highways this year.
