Esther R. Schmid, age 90 of Monticello, died Thursday, December 9, 2010 at the New Glarus Home. Esther was born May 31, 1920 in Washington Township, Green County, the daughter of Charles and Bertha (Rufer) Marty. She attended Purcell rural school and was confirmed at Washington Reformation United Church of Christ.

Esther and Gilman J. Schmid were united in marriage by the late Rev. A.R. Achtemeier on October 7, 1940 at the Washington Church. The couple farmed in the Monticello area for 39 years before retiring to Monticello in 1979. Esther was a member of Zwingli United Church of Christ, Monticello. She enjoyed gardening and visiting the home farm following her retirement.

She is survived by three children, Larry Schmid, Lonnie J. Schmid, both of Monticello, and Lorraine Kubly of Monroe; seven grandchildren, Brian (Joy) Briggs, Bruce (Donna) Briggs, Tami Harding, David A. Schmid, Jamie (Joel) Grant, Kimberly Schmid, and Katie Rasmussen; five great-grandchildren, Emily, Kaden, Macey, Kelsy, and Ryer; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter, Loretta Briggs; two brothers, Marvin and Ivan Marty; and two sisters, Laura Wyss and Gladys Goecks.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 14, 2010, at 11:00 a.m., at Zwingli United Church of Christ, Monticello, with Rev. Lawrence Balleine officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Cemetery, Monticello. Visitation will be at the Voegeli-Newcomer Funeral Home, Monticello, on Monday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund will be established in Esther's name for Zwingli Church.
