Elizabeth Wenger Collentine, known as Bette to all her family and friends, passed away peacefully on November 1, 2011, surrounded by her family. Bette was born on January 26, 1921 in Monroe, Wisconsin. She attended Barat Sacred Heart College in Lake Forest, Illinois and the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. It was at the University of Wisconsin that Bette met her future husband, Arthur Richard Collentine, whom she married on August 9, 1948. Upon his accepting a position as Vice President of Marblehead Limestone Company in Chicago, the Collentines moved to Crystal Lake, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. They lived in Crystal Lake for 35 years and it was there that they reared their two sons, Michael William and Thomas Richard. Upon Mr. Collentine's retirement, the Collentines moved to Atlanta. Mr. Collentine died December 25, 1990.
On September 5, 2011, Bette lost her younger son Thomas Richard, who, after a courageous four year struggle, lost his battle with lung cancer. Mrs. Collentine is survived by her son Michael William Collentine and his wife Valentina, Thomas Richard's widow Monique, a grandson Michael William Collentine, Jr., and three sisters, Mrs. Howard Olson of Dubuque, Iowa, Mrs. Frank Butterfield of Sea Island, Georgia and Mrs. Michael Kubly of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Naples, Florida.
Mrs. Collentine was a life long believer and devout Christian. Her faith, her devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and her family were of primary importance to her, as were her many friends whose companionship and friendship she valued. A long time member of Christ the King Roman Catholic Church, she said the Rosary daily, an act that was extremely meaningful to her. A private mass will be held at Christ the King on Saturday November the 5th at 2:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at St. Victor's Catholic Church, Monroe, Wisconsin at 11 a.m. December 17th, to honor both Bette and her son Thomas. Burial for both Mrs. Collentine and her son Thomas will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
