Edward W. "Eddie" Jordan Jr. age 81, died at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Monroe, on Saturday, February 1, 2014. He was born in Monroe on February 21, 1932, the son of Edward and Florence (Hartwick) Jordan. In 1950 he graduated from Juda High School where he achieved many sports awards. He attended the University of Wisconsin Platteville before being drafted into the Army in November 1951. During his service, Eddie played football and baseball with the 30th Field Artillery Group Gunners. He traveled through Germany playing at various Army bases. He was voted to the southern Germany all-star baseball team with the season's top batting average. He was honorably discharged in October 1953. Eddie played baseball with the Monroe Huber Brewers and the State Line Cardinals while also enjoying pheasant hunting and fishing. Eddie married Betty Quint of Albany on June 4, 1955. They moved to Janesville in 1961 where Eddie worked for General Motors and coached the Blackhawk Credit Union Women's slow pitch team. He married Vivian Bright of Rockford, IL on June 28, 1990. Following his retirement in 1991, Eddie moved to Hattiesburg, MS where he enjoyed his friends, neighbors and church. He especially enjoyed watching the son of his close neighbors, Ronnie and Barb McCowen, play sports. He remained in Hattiesburg until December 2013.
Bill Wartenweiler had a letter to the editor printed in The Monroe Times on July 18, 2013. The editorial referred to Eddie Jordan's 485-foot home run blast bouncing off the roof of the shelter house in Monroe's Recreation Park during the 1950s. Reading this editorial brought Eddie to tears and he wanted to thank all the people who remembered his team from over 60 years ago. The ending paragraph of Bill's letter stated "Considering Eddie used a wooden bat, an old-style baseball, and before steroids were invented, you would have to rank him among the best of the best of homerun hitters."
Survivors include his wife, Vivian Jordan of Rockford, IL; three children, Steve (Cindy) Jordan of Janesville, Lori ( Paul) Steitz of Albany, Rick (Renee) Jordan of Argyle; the mother of his children, Betty Jordan of Janesville; sister-in-law, Pat Jordan of Juda; six stepchildren, Ellen Granemann of Rockton, IL, Barb (Ken) Fry of Machesney Park, IL, Doug (Donna) Case of Necedah, Christine (Steve) Bishop of Florida, Jerri (Larry) Dorman of Long Beach, CA, Heather (George) Busby of Pecatonica, IL; grandchildren, Aaron Jordan of Janesville, Travis (Laura) Jordan of Belleville, Adam Jordan (Dominique DeCosta) of Janesville, Cole Jordan of Argyle, Shannon Williams (Dave Krohn) of Menomonee Falls; great-grandchildren, Royce, Mabel, and Malia; several nieces, nephews, and special cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Rueben Goecks; and a brother, Jerry Jordan.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2014, at 11:30 a.m., at the Newcomer Funeral Home, 1329 31st. Ave., Monroe, with Reverend Randy Booth officiating. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Memorials are suggested in Eddie's name to Pleasant View Nursing Home. The family would like to thank Eddie's wonderful friends in Hattiesburg, MS and the nurses and staff at Pleasant View Nursing Home.
