Duane A. Klein, age 85, of Monroe, passed away on Sunday, June 8, 2014 at his home, surrounded by his family. Duane was born on Jan. 29, 1929 to Albert and Dorothea (Larsen) Klein in Iowa Falls, Iowa. He graduated from Waverly, IA high school, and Cornell College with a BS in Liberal Arts, Mt. Vernon, IA. After college he entered the Navy and served on the staff of the commander, Mine Squadron Three from 1951-1955. He married Velma Becker on January 3, 1959 in Waverly, IA. Duane was employed by various banking firms: moved to Cassville in 1965 and was employed at Badger State Bank until 1969, then moved to Mineral Point where he was employed at Farmers Savings Bank. In 1971, he owned an independent insurance agency/income tax service, which he operated until 1980 when he joined the Livingston State Bank, where he was employed until his retirement in 1995. He enjoyed working various part-time jobs, his most recent as cashier at St. Vincent DePaul Thrift Store, Monroe. Duane loved golfing, fishing, reading, crossword puzzles, vacationing in Rhinelander, retirement trips with Velma and spending time with family and friends. Duane will be remembered most of all as a loving husband, father and grandfather.
Duane is survived by his wife of 55 years, Velma; four children: Annette (David) Meudt of Mineral Point, Theresa (Scott) Schwartz of Cottage Grove, Mary (Joe) St. Antoine of Waukesha, and Joe (Ruth Ann) Klein of Monroe; 9 grandchildren: Charles, Meghan and Robert Goldthorpe; Kayla, Tanner, and Tyler Argall; Aaron and Carly St. Antoine; and Hans Schmidt; also one great-granddaughter, Ainsley Owens; many nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law and other relatives and friends. Duane was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, LaVonne Walters.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, June 12, 2014 at Grace Lutheran Church, 1025 15th Ave. Monroe with Pastor John Tabaka officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery, Monroe. A visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Shriner Hager Gohlke funeral home.
