LENA - Dr. Wayne F. Chapin, age 87, passed away after a brief illness on Tuesday, June 10, 2008 at his home. He was born on December 18, 1920 in Dodge County, Minnesota, to Cleon P. and Nellie F. (Bell) Chapin. He married Hazel C. Gustafson on September 14, 1947 in Mason City, IA. Wayne graduated from Mantorville High School in 1939, he attended Rochester Junior College for 2 years in Rochester, MN and then Iowa State University in Ames, IA. He received his DVM in 1944. He practiced in Tripoli, IA for 2 years then moved to Lena, IL in April of 1947. He practiced with Dr. B.W. Kingrey and his brother, Neal, joined the practice in 1952. Wayne served in the Army from July 1952 to July 1954. He was stationed at Fort Monmouth, N.J. and was a Captain in the Veterinary Corp during the Korean Conflict. He came back to Lena and became partners in the Chapin Veterinary Clinic where they practiced together until retirement in 1986.

Wayne was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. He served 10 years on the Lena-Winslow School Board and 18 years on the Highland Community College Board.

He was a member of the Lena Lions Club and Lena Sportsman Club. He was also a member of the Illinois and Wisconsin AVMA Vet Association.

Wayne is survived by his wife; one son, Dr. Gary (Jennifer) Chapin of Argyle, WI; one grandson, Cole Chapin and two granddaughters, Christine and Cameron Chapin, all of Argyle, WI; one sister, Evelyn C. (Everett) Sandahl of Lena, IL; two sisters-in-law, Flo Chapin of Lena, IL and Gail Parker of Rockford, IL; two nieces, Nancy J. Chapin of Lena, IL and Barbara C. (Stephen) Kaiser of Rockford, IL; one grandniece, Katherine A. Kaiser, and two grandnephews, Andrew and Matthew Kaiser, all of Rockford, IL.

Preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Becky Lee and Jill Ellin; and one brother, Dr. Neal E. Chapin.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday June 14, 2008 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Lena. Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the Leamon Funeral Home in Lena. Officiating will be the Rev. Roger Hurlbut. Burial will be in Lena Burial Park. A memorial has been established in his name. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.leamonfh.com
