He was born December 7, 1925 in Kewaskum, WI and was an all-conference athlete at Kewaskum High School where he played baseball, football and basketball. He enrolled at the University of Wisconsin, but then enlisted in the Navy at the start of U.S. involvement in World War II in 1943. Robert served as a pharmacist's mate and eventually graduated from the Naval Medical School in Bethesda, MD in epidemiology and sanitation in preparation of the invasion of Japan.
After being discharged from the Navy, he completed his undergraduate studies at Lawrence University in Appleton, WI. After being inspired by his father he continued his education and graduated from the Marquette School of Dentistry in 1952.
Robert started a practice in New Glarus and formed a partnership with Dr. Joseph Ganshert of Monroe for some 35 years until retirement. As a Monroe resident he was an active member of St. John's United Church of Christ, serving on the board and teaching Sunday school for many years. Robert was also involved with the JC's, serving on the board of directors. He also was on the Monroe School Board as president where he served for six years.
Professionally, Robert was an active member of American Dental Association, Wisconsin Dental Society and the Green County Dental Society where he served as the Secretary, Treasurer and President. On the state level, he served as a Counselor District Representative and on the Board of Ethics for many years.
After retirement, he joined Rotary International where he gave several months of service to indigent patients in dental clinic missions located in Guatemala as well as Kenya. He was awarded the Paul Harris Fellow, a Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service.
Bob was an avid sports fan and diligently followed the Badgers, Packers, and Cubs. He enjoyed running and long distance bicycling and was a life-long outdoorsman, especially enjoying hunting and fishing. There were annual fishing trips to Canada and duck hunting trips to the Grand River Marsh and North Dakota with his sons, son-in-law and grandsons.
The family would like to thank the Wisconsin Veterans Home of King for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Lawrence University, Marquette School of Dentistry or a memorial of your choice are appreciated.
"I hope, long after I am gone you'll be singing "It's a beautiful day" and ultimately I acknowledge God as my creator and Christ as my savior. Someday I plan on seeing my buddies on the Great Marsh where drought never comes and the ducks always fly."
