DARLINGTON - Shawn F. McQuaid, 33, Darlington, was convicted on Wednesday, Dec. 14, on three counts of a Class I felony charge of arson and a one-count Class B misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct stemming from a December 2010 incident.

Police reports indicate McQuaid started a fight with another man, sent the man threatening text messages and set fire to the man's vehicle. The fire, which spread to an adjacent vehicle and threatened nearby buildings, was extinguished by the Darlington Fire Department.

The court dismissed but read in a Class B misdemeanor charge of sending threatening or obscene computer messages and a Class I felony charge of stalking. A "read in" charge is dismissed as part of a plea agreement. The terms of McQuaid's plea agreement are that he agree to be held responsible and cannot be prosecuted for the charges in the future. He also agreed to four years of probation, with the conditions that he spend eight months in the Lafayette County Jail, undergo counseling, have no contact with the victims or their families, take no alcohol or drugs, find full-time employment and pay the following restitution: $8,157 to Tri-Cor Insurance; a total of $6,310 to the victims; $10,658 to State Farm Insurance; $1,292 to the Darlington Fire Department's insurance company; and $100 to the City of Darlington. His jail term begins Dec. 28 and allows for outside employment under the Huber Act.
