LAFAYETTE COUNTY

FELONIES

• Nick A. Weber Jr., 54, Benton, was charged Tuesday with a felony count of being a felon in possession of a firearm after he allegedly went outside and fired a shotgun into the air May 13 following an argument with his stepson. The stepson reportedly told police he had gone to his mother's house in the 700 block of East Catherine Street in Darlington to pick up some belongings. Court records indicate Weber was there and told his stepson he couldn't take the items and they began arguing. That's when Weber allegedly got his gun, which the stepson told investigators is a Mossberg 20-gauge with a black barrel and a wood stock, and shot a round into the sky. The stepson told police Weber had been drinking. Police noted in their report that when they arrived at the residence, after Weber allegedly fired the gun, he smelled of alcohol and his speech was slurred. He told them the gun he displayed earlier was a pellet gun. Police later learned he was convicted of felony bail jumping in 2004. The 1968 Gun Control Act forbids felons from owning guns. Weber has an initial appearance July 6.
