Felony

• Darrin William Demrow, 38, Brodhead, pleaded no contest Nov. 21 to a Class I felony charge of possessing narcotic drugs and an unclassified misdemeanor charge of possessing drug paraphernalia. He entered a three-year deferred prosecution agreement with conditions that he attend quarterly monitoring conferences, consume no controlled substances, continue counseling and comply with his probation and extended supervision in separate cases. If he complies with all conditions, the convictions will be dismissed. The case stems from an EMS dispatch June 3 to Demrow's address in the 500 block of Mary Lane, Town of Decatur. Demrow had apparently overdosed on heroin and was revived with two doses of Narcan. Police found syringes, needles, steel wool, Suboxone and other evidence of narcotics use in the home.

• Christopher John Smiley, 18, Monroe, was charged Nov. 20 with two Class I felony counts of delivering marijuana, stemming from two undercover police-directed purchases earlier this year. Court records indicate Smiley sold 28 grams of marijuana in the 700 block of 11th Street to a police informant for $270 on Feb. 27 and sold 26 grams of marijuana at his home in the 2600 block of 8th Street to a police informant for $280 on March 13. A warrant is issued for his arrest.

• William P. Burchard, 51, Orfordville, was charged Nov. 21 with five Class H felony counts of forgery and six Class A misdemeanor counts of bail jumping. Court records indicate Burchard stole a family member's checkbook and wrote numerous fraudulent checks in a matter of days in October to a variety of businesses in the Brodhead area, including M&J's Bar, 1117 West 2nd Street, and Piggly Wiggly, 1604 1st Center Avenue. A Bank of Brodhead employee told police she "received over $2,800 in fraudulent checks returned" on the account. Burchard admitted to police that he has a "substance abuse problem that he was supporting." A warrant is issued for his arrest.
