Carroll F. "Shorty" Holmes

Carroll F. "Shorty" Holmes, age 86, of rural Argyle, WI, passed away on Wednesday, November 13, 2013, at his home. He was born on March 28, 1927 in Merrill, WI, the son of Marshall and Bertha (Behrens) Holmes. Shorty grew up in the Brodhead/Juda area and graduated from Juda High School in 1944. On February 16, 1952, Shorty was united in marriage to Ann Howe. They lived in rural Browntown from 1952 until 1959. In 1959, they moved to Argyle Township where he has resided since. He farmed there until 1982 and then worked as a crop adjuster for many years.

Shorty is survived by his children: Patti (Mike) McGowan of Black River Falls, WI, Michele (Craig) Gruenberg of Hales Corners, WI, Tom (Julie) Holmes of Brodhead, WI, Tim (Penny) Holmes of Argyle, WI, Laurie (David) Meixelsperger of Middleton, WI, and Jim Holmes of Argyle; an aunt: Grace Hass of Merrill; a sister-in-law: Bonita Holmes, Monroe; 15 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Ann in 2005; his parents; and two brothers: Lloyd and Rex.

Shorty was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Argyle and past member of Argyle Township Board, Argyle School Board, Blanchardville Coop, and the Blackhawk Saddle Club. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He took great joy in playing cards with friends, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, November 16, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 213 North Lafayette Street in Argyle with Rev. Thomas Gillespie officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in rural Argyle. A visitation will be held Friday, November 15, 2013, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Erickson Funeral Home, 801 East Milwaukee Street in Argyle, where a rosary will be recited at 4:00 p.m. A visitation will also be held Saturday, November 16, 2013, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass at the church.
