Calvin "Cal" Schmahl, age 87, passed away on July 30, 2010 at the Pleasant View Nursing Home in Monroe following a period of decline after acute kidney failure. Cal was born on March 19, 1923 to Oscar and Ida (Ohlrogge) Schmahl in Plymouth, WI. He graduated from Chilton High School in 1941 and began working as a draftsman at Arps Corp in New Holstein. He joined the Army in 1943 and served with the 44th Division in Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He received the Good Conduct Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Ribbon with three Battle Stars, the American Theatre Ribbon, and the WWII Victory Medal. He was Honorably Discharged in 1945 and went back to work at Arps Corporation, eventually becoming chief engineer. He worked at Arps for 40 years and then continued another 20 years with Amerequip, the company that bought out Arps in 1982, for a total of 60 years as an engineer.

Cal married Eleanor Brocker on July 27, 1946 at Ebenezer Reformed Church in Chilton. They had three children: Diane, Ronald and Darlene.

Cal is survived by his two daughters: Diane del Regato of Indianapolis, IN, Darlene (Marvin) Becker of Juda, WI; 4 grandchildren: David del Regato of Florida, Jacob Becker of New York, Marcus Becker of Minnesota, and Kimberly Becker, a student at UW LaCrosse. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor in 1995 and his son, Ronald in 2001.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 4, 2010 at Ebenezer UCC (44 W. Washington St.) in Chilton with the Rev. Kathy Gloff officiating. A memorial fund has been established in the name of Calvin O. Schmahl for Ebenezer United Church of Christ and Zion United Methodist Church in Juda, WI.
