MONROE - Authorities believe there is a possibility that two Green County incidents, an attempted burglary and a theft from a vehicle, at about 10:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, may be related.
At the time of a news release Monday, the Green County Sheriff's Department hadn't determined whether the locations were targeted or were part of random acts.
The suspect in both incidents is described as a black male, 6-feet tall or taller, and wearing winter clothing.
Sheriff's dispatch received a phone call at 10:18 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, from the homeowner at a rural home 1.5 miles southeast of Monticello in Mt. Pleasant township. The caller reported a suspicious person had been in the garage and attempted to force entry into the occupied home by kicking at a door.
Deputies and the Monticello Police Department immediately responded and arrived within minutes, while the Sheriff's dispatcher stayed on the phone with the caller.
Preliminary investigation revealed a lone male had initially entered an unlocked garage and attempted to enter the living area, discovering the inside door that led into the house was locked.
The suspect proceeded to the outside of the house and was seen carrying a handgun by one of the two adults that live at the home.
Once outside, the suspect made an unsuccessful attempt to enter by kicking a side door and apparently left the area prior to the officers' arrival.
Upon arrival, responding officers did not see anyone outside, but observed footwear impressions that led away from the residence.
The Sheriff's Department Canine unit also responded, but was not able to track the suspect, as it appeared the person left in a vehicle.
Follow-up investigation included immediately contacting area homes to relay information of the incident and to ensure the suspect had left the area.
In a second incident that occurred at about the same time in the Village of Albany, a vehicle owner observed a person inside their passenger car. The suspect fled on foot.
The owner reported items were taken from the vehicle, which was parked in the driveway.
The Albany Police Department is investigating, and no firearm was observed in this incident.
