BENTON - A Benton man remained hospitalized Thursday evening with life-threatening injuries from a self-inflicted gun shot wound.
Lafayette County sheriff's deputies responded to a report of a shooting at 2:03 a.m. Thursday in Benton. The 30-year-old victim initially told police he saw a Peeping Tom near a residence and confronted him. The man said that he confronted the intruder, who produced a pistol and shot the man.
After further investigating of the incident, deputies later determined the man's wound was self-inflicted; and there was no evidence to support the claim of an assailant, according to Lafayette County Sheriff Scott Pedley.
The man received a gun shot would to his abdomen from a small caliber firearm. He was transported to a Dubuque hospital with life-threatening injuries, Pedley said.
The investigation is continuing. The matter will be referred to the Lafayette County District Attorney for review.
