New Glarus, WI - Amy Rebecca (Vander Schaaf) Breisch, passed away on Saturday, March 5, 2011 at the age of 84 years at the New Glarus Home. She was preceded in death by her parents, the Rev. and Mrs. John Vander Schaaf, her husband, Don Breisch, her brothers Merrill and Rev. Robert, sisters, Laura Lensink and Ruth Thompson, brothers-in-law Arnon Lensink and Dr. Willard Thompson, and a sister-in-law Esther. She was born in Denver, Colorado in 1926, October 23. She was the youngest of seven children. Her childhood years were spent in Springfield, South Dakota. Later the family moved to Alton-Orange City, Iowa. Amy graduated from Northwestern Academy and then on to Central College, Pella, Iowa. She was a member of the A Cappella Choir. She received her teaching certificate and taught along with her husband. Her marriage took place on August 14, 1954. They moved to New Glarus in 1969. Following the death of her husband on July 29, 1977 Amy worked in the New Glarus Public Library and substituted in the New Glarus and Monticello Elementary Schools. She served as organist for the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church also churches in Iowa and Wisconsin for over sixty years. She was a member of the Cover Girls - quilting group making quilts for the needy. She sewed countless layettes for the Pregnancy Center and Lutheran World Relief.
Surviving are three children, Paul (Patrice) of Newport Beach, California, John (Sherry) of Verona, Wisconsin, and Patricia (Pete) Cocherell of Orfordville, Wisconsin. She had seven grandchildren; Trevor, Tanner, Autumn, Destiny, Summer, Gabriel, and Alex, and three step-grandchildren; Kyle, Derek, and Cameron. Surviving brothers and sisters are Gladys (Merrill-deceased) of Geneseo, Illinois, Ada Fisher (Dr. Henry-deceased) of Marion, Indiana, and Howard (Elizabeth-deceased) Vander Schaaf of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 506 12th Avenue, New Glarus, WI with the Rev. Gene Talley officiating with burial in the Swiss Church Cemetery.
