MONROE — An elderly Belleville man is facing up to 60 years in prison after he is alleged to have committed several acts of sexual abuse with victims he was related to or living with at two south-central Wisconsin locations.

As a result of the investigation, Bernard A. Cockroft, 75, is charged in Green County Circuit Court with several felonies, including repeated sexual assault of same child, child enticement-sexual contact, and first-degree child sexual assault.

The abuse is alleged to have occurred in the summer of 2016, at two residences, one in Mazomanie and the other in The Town of Exeter. He reportedly abused his stepdaughter from the age of 13 to 18. And at one point, he would “bribe” his child victims with chocolate and other niceties, according to the complaint.

What’s more, according to a criminal complaint, the defendant touched the victim inappropriately on multiple occasions and exposed them to pornography he was watching on a computer.

“(She further explained) that her grandfather had ‘assaulted’ or ‘abused’ her family members to include her cousin, identified later as (victim 2), her aunt (deceased), and her mother,” said the criminal complaint.

At the Mazomanie address, the complaint details alleged incidences in which he allegedly tried to spy on female relatives in a bathroom he had rigged to not be completely private — with gaps in the door frame allowing him to see them shower or use the bathroom.

“(The victim) further described that any time when her mother was not present and she or her sister would be exiting the bathroom from showering or using the bathroom, (the defendant) would be outside the door in the hall area, almost as if he were waiting for them to come out,” said the criminal complaint. “(She) recalled that (the defendant) would make inappropriate sexual comments to her and her sister, as well as their friends when they would be visiting, about what they were wearing.”

Cockroft was scheduled for a preliminary hearing at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 15 before Circuit Judge Faun Marie Phillipson.

According to court records, Cockroft on Monday remained in Green County Jail on $25,000 bond.
