Green County

Felonies

●  Dana L. Murphy, 37, Monroe, was charged Sept. 20 with a Class I felony charge of possessing a synthetic cannabinoid, as a second or subsequent offense and party to a crime. A warrant was issued for her arrest after she failed to appear in court for an initial appearance Oct. 14. The case stems from an anonymous tip to the Stateline Area Narcotics Team that Murphy was getting drugs in the mail from Florida. In May, police intercepted a package addressed to her and the Green County K-9 indicated the presence of drugs inside it. It was found to contain 95 grams of suspected synthetic cannabis. A search of her Toyota Camry and her apartment in the 800 block of 6th Street located no other items of evidential value. She told police the substance in the package was just incense she ordered and she didn’t plan to smoke it, she “just lets it burn in a tray above a candle in the living room.”

●  Shawn Michael Hopkins, 29, Brodhead, was charged Sept. 20 with felony bail jumping, stemming from an arrest July 12 in Stephenson County, Illinois. Police reports filed with the court indicate deputies responded to the equestrian campground at Lake Le-Aqua-Na for a report of a “highly intoxicated male,” later identified as Hopkins, “screaming and cussing at other campers.” Hopkins told officers he was upset because he had been riding horses for a couple of years but people were telling him he was doing it wrong. He became belligerent and when a deputy handcuffed him and put him in the back of a squad, Hopkins tried to strangle himself with the seatbelt. After an ambulance was called, Hopkins was “fighting, cussing, swearing and threatening all of the people that were in the back of the ambulance,” then spit at, punched and kicked officers and medical workers. Hopkins faces felony charges in Stephenson County related to the arrest. His alleged alcohol consumption that day violates his bond conditions in several felony cases in Wisconsin.

●  Richard Wayne Long, 53, Monticello, was charged Sept. 30 with a Class G felony count of manufacturing THC, a Class I felony count of maintaining a drug trafficking place and a misdemeanor count of possessing drug paraphernalia, stemming from a search warrant executed on his home in the 200 block of West Coates Avenue on Sept. 29. Court records indicate Stateline Area Narcotics Team agents got the warrant after receiving a tip of a marijuana grow inside Long’s residence. The search resulted in the seizure of 12 small and 18 full-size marijuana plants “located between two grow tents in the upstairs west bedroom.” Agents also seized LED grow lights, marijuana seeds in prescription bottles in the kitchen fridge and about a dozen firearms. About 90 minutes into the search, Long showed up at the residence and “stated he was responsible for the marijuana grow.”

●  Tanner Ray Beck, 19, Freeport, was charged Oct. 2 with a Class I felony count of retail theft. Court records indicate he shoplifted $515 worth of Xbox and Seagate game drives Aug. 25 from the Walmart Supercenter in Monroe, and Walmart employees located packaging for the items in the infant clothing section.

●  Matthew Wayne Schmid, 39, Monroe, was charged Oct. 23 with felony bail jumping and a misdemeanor count of retail theft, stemming from a gas drive-off Oct. 9 at Olin’s Juda Oasis, totaling $25.06.

Misdemeanors

●  Eric Christopher Schmid, 25, Monticello, pleaded guilty Aug. 21 to criminal damage to property and criminal trespass to property, both Class A misdemeanors. Other charges including attempted battery were dismissed. He was sentenced to 18 months on probation, with conditions including absolute sobriety and AODA treatment and counseling. He court assessments total $886. The case stems from an incident Nov. 2 into the early morning hours of Nov. 3, 2018. According to court records, after seeing his ex-girlfriend out at a bar, he broke a window to the front door of a residence on North Main Street in Monticello because she was inside and sent her a text message saying “I will hurt him,” referring to the man living there. The woman told police she and Schmid broke up over a year prior and that he was violent with her on several occasions, including an incident in July 2018 in Blanchardville when he reportedly hit her neck with a closed fist five times, pulled her hair, put her in a choke hold and pushed her onto a coffee table. She also said he forced her to have sex with him. She said she didn’t report the incidents previously.

●  Donald W. Moore, 41, Millston, had two misdemeanor counts of disorderly conduct dismissed Aug. 21. The case stems from a Feb. 17 domestic dispute in the 300 block of 2nd Street in Monroe during which he allegedly began to choke a woman. Moore’s lawyer, Brian Severson of Severson & Smead, LLP out of Madison sent a letter June 25 asking that the preliminary hearing be changed to a status hearing because Moore had been found incompetent in two prior criminal cases and he was under guardianship. That request was approved by Green County District Attorney Craig Nolen, who ordered a competency examination of Moore. On Aug. 19, the court received the findings of this competency evaluation. Nolen did not dispute the report and he moved to dismiss the case.
