Felonies
● Noah Samuel Dedrick, 40, Brodhead, pleaded no contest and entered an 18-month deferred prosecution July 10 on a Class H felony charge of attempted battery to a law enforcement officer and a misdemeanor charge of criminal damage to property. Related charges were dismissed as part of a plea deal. Conditions of his deferred prosecution agreement include payment of $2,275.45 in restitution and assessments for mental health counseling and alcohol or other drug abuse treatment. If he complies with the agreement, the case will be fully dismissed. The case stems from a disturbance Nov. 22 outside a residence in the 700 block of East 2nd Avenue in Brodhead. Court records indicate Dedrick banged on the front door, broke windows, yelled and was “mooing like a cow” when Brodhead Police Officer Nicholas Bartels arrived. Bartels reported that Dedrick “charged at me with his hands still in his pockets” and later kicked Bartels in the chest with both feet while wearing heavy steel-toed work boots, which Bartels noted “did not cause pain because he made contact with the hard plates in my vest.” Bartels reported that in the course of the encounter, he tased Dedrick and “gave him an open-handed strike to the chest” in response to Dedrick charging at him.
● Jeanette Ann Bauer, 35, formerly of Brodhead and now of Saint Croix Falls, was sentenced July 11 to five days in jail and three years on probation after pleading guilty to a Class I felony count of possessing narcotics and no contest to misdemeanor counts of possessing drug paraphernalia and second-offense operating while under the influence. Her probation was authorized for transfer to Polk County. The case stems from a Dec. 7 traffic accident at about 7:15 a.m. Dec. 7 in Brodhead. Court records indicate she rear-ended another vehicle at the four-way stop at 1st Street and East 9th Avenue. She was nodding off and told police she was tired after a long shift at work. Officers reported finding in her vehicle a bottle of prescription morphine, a capped syringe and a kitchen scouring pad used “commonly in smoking narcotics such as cocaine and heroin.”
● Chad A. Fernandes, 32, Brodhead, was charged July 15 with a Class I felony count of possessing narcotic drugs and a misdemeanor count of possessing drug paraphernalia, stemming from an Oct. 19 incident at a home on East Exchange Street in Brodhead. Police and EMTs responded to 911 calls reporting a possible drug overdose and arrived to find Fernandes “slumped over in a lawn chair in the garage” next to a spoon and a syringe with heroin residue, according to court records. Fernandes was administered two doses of Narcan. In an interview with police at the ER, he said he “got heroin from someone for giving them a ride,” that it was “just stupid” and “this is what happens after not using for over a year.”
● Christopher Michael Kummer, 28, Ottawa, Illinois, was sentenced July 18 to two years on probation after pleading no contest to disorderly conduct, battery and criminal damage to property, with related felony charges including false imprisonment dismissed. His probation is authorized for transfer to the state of Illinois. The case stems from a domestic dispute Jan. 17 at his then-home on Mellenberger Road in Browntown. Court records indicate he choked a woman by grabbing and twisting her hoodie sweatshirt, pushed his knuckles into her face and said, “How bad do you think it will hurt if I hit you?” He also reportedly threatened that if she called police he was going to “beat her so bad” when he got out of jail she would be dead or seriously injured. A deputy’s report from the scene notes Kummer asserted he was being treated unfairly because a female deputy was investigating the case.
● Edwin Lee Jahn, 46, Clinton, Iowa, was sentenced to nine months in jail after pleading no contest July 30 to a Class H felony charge of forgery, with related felony charges including identity theft dismissed. The case stems from a forged check for $3,619.43 from a Blanchardville business, cashed at the Bank of New Glarus on Jan. 3. The owner of the business told police he had never heard of Jahn, nor had Jahn ever worked for him. Jahn owes $5,365.43 in restitution and court assessments.
● Eulalio Pineda Perez, 45, currently in ICE custody at the Dodge Detention Facility in Juneau, was sentenced to three years on probation after pleading no contest July 30 to misdemeanor charges of battery, bail jumping and criminal damage to property. Other charges including felony child abuse were dismissed but “read in,” meaning the judge could consider them at sentencing. The charges stem from three contacts with police over the past year. On Aug. 9, 2018, deputies were dispatched for a report that Pineda Perez had been drinking, was hitting his sons and had thrown a phone. On Dec. 18, court records indicate he was “drunk and disorderly,” put a pillow over a woman’s face while she was sleeping, busted a lamp and hit a teen with a closed fist. On Dec. 29, Pineda Perez called 911 “multiple times” from a Monroe motel room. Police arrived to find him incapacitated after drinking an estimated 20 beers throughout the day.
