MONROE — Monroe police are asking the public for patience as the department continues to investigate a string of thefts that has grown to impact Lafayette and Rock Counties.
“As of today’s date, I have had a number of citizens come forward to identify property stolen from grave sites and residential areas,” Detective Sgt. Dan Skatrud said in a statement. “There are still a number of items that haven’t been identified.”
Police made an arrest in the case in which they said a Monroe woman took lawn decoration items, solar lights; and memorial and decorative items from grave sites in Monroe, Brodhead, Green County and even in some Lafayette County locations. She would then allegedly sell them on social media or elsewhere.
Carrie Thompson, 46, was charged earlier this month with several counts of receiving stolen property, obstructing justice and resisting arrest.
So far, she has only been charged with misdemeanors but police have said those charges could eventually grow into felony status, depending on the prosecutor’s view of the developing case, he said.
“I know it has been difficult but I am asking for your patience while I continue the investigation,” said Skatrud. “Once all the information/evidence has been put together the case will be forwarded to the district attorney’s office.”
